Maths Pirates — pirate coordinates game

The classic pirate game for the whiteboard. Split the class into teams and take turns choosing squares on a shared grid to grab gold and power-ups — but bank it before a rival steals it! Steal, sink, bomb, swap, shield and mirror keep it tactical, and the scores keep themselves. Prefer the coordinates version? Print a unique treasure map for every pirate and call the squares from the board.

How to use it, who it's for & FAQ

      How to use it

      1. Set the number of teams (and names), pick a grid size, then “Play on the board”.
      2. On your team's turn, click a square — or “Pick a random square” — to reveal gold or a power-up.
      3. Bank your gold to keep it safe; use Steal, Sink, Bomb, Swap and Gift on rivals, and hold a Shield or Mirror to defend.
      4. When the board's cleared, the most gold wins. Or use “Print maps” and the “Coordinate caller” for the print-and-play version.

      Who it's for

      • Teachers: a high-energy team game that rewards a bit of strategy — great as a reward or revision wrap-up.
      • Tutors: practise coordinates and mental addition with a game everyone wants to win.
      • Anyone: a tactical pirate treasure game for a group.

      FAQ

How do you play the board game?

Teams take turns choosing a square on the shared grid. Gold goes into your “unbanked” pot, which rivals can steal or sink — until you land a Bank square and make it safe. Highest total when the board is cleared wins.

      What are the power-ups?

Gold (200–5000), Double, Bank, Steal, Sink, Bomb (unblockable), Swap, Gift 1000, Shield (blocks an attack), Mirror (reflects it back), Mystic Ball, and answer-a-question-to-steal. A legend explains each one.

      Can I still print maps?

Yes — “Print maps” makes a unique treasure map for every pirate, and the “Coordinate caller” calls squares at random or by click for everyone to check on their own map.

      Is it free and private?

Completely — no ads, no sign-up, and it works offline once loaded.
